What's wrong with recycling and how to fix it

June 2019—The recycling industry is in disarray. It costs more, in many cases, to process the materials than what the market will pay for those materials. As communities have tried to make it easier for the public to recycle (like dumping everything into one bin), the quality of the materials and the number of materials that can be recycled drop. Now some communities are abandoning recycling at all and instead trying to address the purchasing problem up-stream.
