Toyota testing solar powered Prius in Japan
Sept 2019—Some Priuses already have a tiny solar panel that charges the auxiliary battery. But this new model is covered in high efficiency, thin film solar panels. It doesn’t do much for the look of the car right now but the hope is it will be able to extend driving range by charging while you’re driving, not only parked in the sun.
Car manufacturing giant Toyota Motor Corp is to begin trialling later this month a new version of its Prius hybrid car, this time with up to 860 watts of thin film solar that will be able to charge its “solar battery” as it drives, and add more than 50kms to its fossil fuel-free driving range.
Fifty kilometers (31 miles) could be enough for the commute home. Driving on sunlight.
