How food deserts make people fat
According to this research, processed foods contribute to obesity. So if you’re poor and live in a “food desert” where you can’t buy fresh food, it is more likely that you and your kids will be overweight. Even if you have access to fresh produce, it takes time to make a meal from scratch and according to the study, it cost 40% more produce the healthy meals. One interesting part of this month-long study was that when faced with a less processed meal, people ate fewer calories. Processed food manufacturers design their foods for “more-ishness,” flavors that make you want to eat more. So maybe the healthy meals don’t end up costing that much more after all.
