Beat bugs without DEET

If you’re in an area with malaria or an outbreak of West Nile Virus, you might need to use something stronger. But here are natural ingredients that repel bugs.

There are a few products I’ve found work pretty well. Choose one with a scent you don’t mind.

  • Badger Organic Anti-bug Balm, made with citronella and rosemary is the consistency of Chapstick and comes in a tin. It doesn’t cover as well as a spray but if you’re traveling, you don’t have to worry about it leaking all over your clothes. I didn’t include it with my liquids when traveling to Panama (where it worked fine, even on a night hike) and TSA seemed fine with it.

  • Repel Lemon Eucalyptus Insect Repellent, which I found at Big 5, is a spray.

  • Wondercide has Flea and Tick spray for pets but I’ve used it on myself. You can choose from different scents. the one I got was lemongrass and cedar. It’s probably the strongest smelling of the three.
