Rome riding on recycling
October 2019—Rome has instituted a program where people recycle plastic bottles in exchange for a credit toward public transit.
Machines at three metro stations in the city exchange one plastic bottle for €0.05 in credit, making a €1.50 journey worth 30 bottles.
The program encourages two sustainable behaviors at the same time: recycling and public transportation. And it creates a way for the poor or homeless to “work,” gathering up litter and turning it into something they need.
