10x20x30: A new food waste reduction effort
10 major retailers involving
20 of their major suppliers to reduce waste in half by
‘30 (related to the 2030 UN Sustainable Development Goal)
Why: 30 percent of food is wasted worldwide. It’s plowed under, doesn’t get to market, goes bad, exceeds the sell-by date or is wasted by consumers.
Who’s participating: AEON, Ahold Delhaize, IKEA Food, Kroger, METRO AG, Pick n Pay, The Savola Group, Sodexo, Tesco, and Walmart.
“The latest research from Champions 12.3 [a voluntary coalition of business, NGO’s and government focused on the UN Sustainability Development Goal # 12.3] is clear – we need to see more companies targeting, measuring and acting on food waste and publishing food waste data if the world is to deliver Sustainable Development Goal 12.3 and halve food waste by 2030,” said Dave Lewis, Chair of Champions 12.3 and Group Chief Executive of Tesco. “10x20x30 is a clear opportunity for companies to work in partnership with hundreds of food suppliers to tackle food waste from farm to fork.”
